| A. "Federal
Electronic Health Technology Initiatives: How They Will Affect
Group Practice" |
|
Robert M. Tennant |
| |
In this interactive
session, you will learn about the latest federal government
initiatives in the area of health information technology
(HIT). Hear from MGMA's senior policy advisor what are the
critical policies being developed in Washington, as well as
the roadblocks medical practices have faced and will face in
their migration to these new technologies. For many practices,
the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)
has proven only to be an additional expense. However, this
session will examine how practices have dramatically improved
their patient satisfaction and administrative efficiency by
properly implementing these complex and comprehensive
regulations. In addition, learn how you can leverage such
technologies as electronic health records and electronic
prescribing to improve the performance of your practice. Gain
knowledge of other critical issues on the horizon such as
pay-for-performance, ICD-10, personal health records, and
standardized health plan ID cards. At the conclusion of this
program you will be better able to identify important issues
leading to successful implementation of HIT and recognize
important barriers to overcome as you move your own
organization toward adoption.
Robert M. Tennant is Senior Policy Advisor, Health
Informatices, with the Washington, DC-based Government Affairs
Department of the Medical Group Management Association. |

| B. "Hiring
and Firing Without Getting Burned" |
|
Martie Aaron Ross and
Carolyn Matthews |
| |
It sounds simple enough -
hire qualified candidates, fire them if they don't perform -
but there are a host of legal issues that can trap the
unsuspecting employer when making hiring and firing decisions.
For physician groups, there's the added risk that a
disgruntled employee may become a whistleblower. This session
will provide practical strategies to avoid finding yourself in
an employment lawsuit or government investigation.
Martie Aaron Ross advises health care providers concerning the
development of compliance programs, reimbursement issues,
HIPAA administrative simplification, rural health issues,
fraud and abuse as sell as physician recruitment and risk
management issues.
Carolyn Matthews concentrates her practice on defending
employers in employment discrimination cases, including cases
alleging race, gender, age or disability discrimination;
sexual harassment and hostile work environment; retaliation;
and state law claims.
Both Ms. Ross and Ms. Matthews are partners in the law firm of
Foulston Siefken LLP. |

| C. "Identity
Theft and Health Care" |
|
Debra Barnett, JD |
| |
This session will discuss
some of the issues encountered daily in the business world and
specifically the medical office. Do you require your front
desk to check the identity of the patient presenting and
validate the insurance card they present? Do you have patients
refuse to give you their social security number? Is there risk
to the practice that insists on obtaining this information?
Answers to these questions and specific examples of cases of
identity fraud will be given and attendees will have an
opportunity to ask how these situations or others might impact
their own practice and how they must be handled.
Debra Barnett is an Assistant United States Attorney. She has
prosecuted federal crimes, including but not limited to
illegal weapons, narcotics trafficking, bank robberies, civil
rights violations and train wrecks. For the past 9 years, she
has specialized in the prosecution of white collar crimes
including corporate fraud, identity theft, as well as
financial institution fraud, academic fraud and government
program fraud. She received her Juris Doctorate degree in 1986
from the University of Kansas. |
