MARCIA NIELSEN, Ph.D.
"KANSAS GOVERNOR'S HEALTHCARE PROJECTS &
THE KANSAS ID PROJECT"
Marcia Nielsen, Ph.D., MPH, is the Executive Director of the
Kansas Health Policy Authority. She oversees the planning,
implementation, and operations of the mission of the
Authority, an independent board-run agency. The Authority
develops and maintains a coordinated health policy agenda
that combines effective purchasing and administration with
health promotion oriented public health strategies. On July
1, 2006, it assumed operational control of the state's
Medicaid program and State Employee Health Benefits Program.
Prior to serving as Executive Director,
Dr. Nielsen was Chair of the Kansas Health Policy Authority
Board since it began meeting in November 2005.
Between 2002 and 2006, Dr. Nielsen
served at the University of Kansas Medical Center as a
faculty member in the Department of Health Policy and
Management, as well as Assistant Vice Chancellor for Health
Policy. Her teaching and research interests are in federal
and state health policy, the U.S. health care system, and
public health. During her tenure at KU Medical Center, she
was co-director of the Social Basis of Medicine course for
first year medical students and taught several courses in
the Masters of Health Services program. Dr. Nielsen has been
involved in numerous research projects, including exploring
issues related to the affordability of health insurance in
Kansas.
Prior to 2002, she spent ten years
working in Washington, D.C., as a senior legislative
assistant for a U.S. Senator and a health care lobbyist.
Dr. Nielsen received a Ph.D. in Health Policy and Management
from Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, a Master of
Public Health degree from George Washington University and a
Bachelor of Science from Briar Cliff College in Sioux City,
Iowa. She is a Nebraska native, former U.S. Army Reservist,
and a returned Peace Corps volunteer. |
